Four time Red Dot Design Award winner, well traveled Scotsman, Portuguese local and all around creative Beau McClellan is in Dubai. The artist and creator of various custom LED chandeliers is in town to showcase a few of his pieces at The Hotel Show this week. I caught up with him this past Friday at the weekly Interior Designers breakfast at MAKE.
So what is the big deal? Well photos just can’t do the quality of LED light and obsession with detail any justice. Beau has made his career perfecting his designs from the curved mirrored glass that he uses on his pieces to sourcing from the best the world has to offer for parts and fabrication and re-analyzing his designs until he feels they are timeless and efficient luxury contemporary LED fixtures.
My personal favorite piece is his Doha Reflective Flow Installation – which turned out to be the “largest chandelier in the world” by the Guinness book of World Records. The building was right next to my office in Doha across from the Corniche and famous Museum of Islamic Art by I.M.Pei. I snuck in past security one afternoon to gaze at the lighting masterpiece entirely unaware of its fame, complexity or creator to capture a few shots (I will post them if I can find them). It is an absolute pity that the building is not for the public as this truly is as Sheikha Mozah put it “The Pride of Doha” with the book she had commissioned to document the piece.
Here are a few stats on the Reflective Flow Installation:
- 38.5 metres long
- 2,500 pieces of optical cut crystals
- 165,000 LEDs
- 4,600 specially coated glass panels
- 19,900 kilograms beating the previous record of 3,000 kg
It is not just one of a kind collections you can find from the Beau McClellan Portugal design studio. The team has devised a very technical but easy to use plug and play contemporary chandelier with the same design concepts as the Reflective Flow Chandelier.
In addition there is a series of pendants, wall sconces, table and floor lamps that add to the collection.
You can check out his pieces up close and personal right now (May 15-17th, 2012) at the Hotel Show here in Dubai at the “B5 The Art of Living” booth. And if you are not fortunate enough to make it out to the show you can always check out his products in the B5 showroom in Fraser Suites on Sheikh Zayed Road. More to come on that fun showroom and lighting in Dubai soon….

One of my favourite designers. Beau’s work is awesome… really inspiring for all the lighting designers across the world =).
very nice, I love that fluid pendant
I am a fan of McClellan’s masterpieces and this latest is simply impressive. The fluid pendant and Reveal Chandelier are my personal faves! Just amazing to see brilliant stuff like these.
