This Day in History – March 27th

Google search page UAE 126th birthday of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Thanks to a Google image the Famous Architect Mies van der Rohe has made headlines again. Today we celebrate the 126th Birthday of the German-American architectural genius. I could go on forever about the plethora of famous buildings he has designed. His legacy lives on forever through the beautiful buildings and architectural concepts that shape the work of many designers today.

Mies was the man who coined the term “God is in the details”. He also created arguably the most famous chair in history… the Barcelona Chair.

I had the pleasure to touring S.R. Crown Hall in the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago in 2010 with a dear friend of mine who is now following the architectural path up the design hierarchy pyramid! I also made my pilgrimage to the Barcelona Pavilion in Barcelona this past October in a beautiful downpour.

Design Days Dubai 2012

Design Days Dubai March 2012

I recently had the privilege of attending the opening preview night of Design Days Dubai below the stunning Burj Khalifa courtesy of Beau McClellan lighting. See Modenus for my guest blog and photo gallery about the Emirates event with an array of photos from the 27 world renowned galleries that were represented.

The week showcased some imaginative displays of artistic recreations of daily objects which make a house both a home and museum. I have the privilege of working with one of the young artists/designers who created a piece for the event. Maysoun Abou-Houly is a recent graduate from the American Univerity of Sharjah and an intern at GAJ Architects. She has a passion for welding and shared with me her creation “The skeletal revolving bench” for Design Week.

Some of my favorite, pieces from the show included custom chandeliers, innovative lighting, room dividers and game tables. Seeing these collectible furniture pieces in person helped me truly appreciate the talent and craftsmanship that goes into luxury brands and the detailing that should be expected in contemporary luxury interiors.
