A city of Intersections and CANnections
Edmonton in many ways represents a city of intersections and connections. The city we call Edmonton, is composed of two cities originally divided along the river valley: Edmonton on the North side and Strathcona on the south side, which became one city in 1912. Geographically, Edmonton is situated on the boundary between prairie to the south and boreal forest to the north. The North Saskatchewan River, which bisects Edmonton into regions of North and South, offers to Edmontonians a beautiful river valley – the largest expanse of urban parkland in North America. While the river valley bisects the city, it also serves to connect us. The most visual aspect of this connection is the many bridges that transverse the valley. While bridges offer a foundation to connect, regions and people, it is people of the region that truly build a city by fostering connections and bridging the gaps in society between the have and have-nots. People often look the other way when it comes to dealing with society’s ills such as homelessness and hunger. Our concept for CANstruction is to create a design that represents the connections and divides created by the river valley. Let’s bridge the hunger ….. gap.
On Friday May 8, 2009 our office took part in CANstruction, our team work tirelessly all week in preparation for the big build. All our hard work paid off as we took home a prize. Our design will now be entered into the international competition that will take place next February. All the food that we bought will be donated to the food bank. This is a good day for Kasian, a good day for Edmonton and a great day for the Edmonton food banks. If you have time, please make it out to Southgate mall to see the real thing– (Whitemud, and 111th street) located in the mall between the bay, and sears. It will be up for the next two weeks.
This year there were 9 teams, more than double last year’s numbers and some stiff competition. The designs ranged from world globes, to low flow toilets. The competition was judged on 4 categories.
